The key aims of the CSI+ project are to: provide a clear picture of the security of domestic IoT devices; increase public understanding of the everyday crime risks such devices pose (through a systematic review of the academic literature); produce a consumer security index that the public could use to inform their choices at the point of purchase; and, to encourage its adoption so as to influence market forces, and in turn to encourage the manufacture of secure domestic IoT devices by default.
Dr Blythe who worked on the PETRAS Cyberhygiene project, and seconded to DCMS, has been recruited to work on the CSI and CSI+ projects. The synergy between his previous work, current secondment and the CSI project provide a unique opportunity to extend the CSI project and to accelerate its impact. The aims of this CSI+ proposal are thus to extend the activity and reach of the project by establishing additional partnerships and working with these new partners to realise the project and PETRAS aims.
In particular, the CSI+ project activities would allow us to further incorporate behavioural insights, build on the findings from the PETRAS cyberhygiene project, enhance our understanding of the crime risks IoT devices present (through a review of open source material), incorporate elements of co-design, to collaborate directly with DCMS on their policy work, and to encourage uptake of the index through links with retail, police and government communities.
